Digital media make it possible for work to continue reaching people beyond working hours. Vanishing Weekend frames withdrawal and a wish to disappear as clues to this pressure, translating a threatened personal space into an AR exploration and a physical installation.
Two layers of AR
The first AR layer uses graphic overlays, keywords and repeated messages within urban scenes. The second introduces spatial models: compressed, fragmented and enclosing forms appear in outdoor locations. Moving from graphic clues to three-dimensional scenes makes the emotional pressure visible as a change in space.
Following the clues
Visitors explore locations using a phone, encounter visual clues and interpret the states they suggest. Three posters extend this narrative through disrupted emotion, fragmented life, eroded personal space and retreat into a virtual world. Modelling and AR tests develop the visual forms used across the experience.
A physical black hole of personal space
The physical installation represents a space into which young people retreat. Visitors approach its irregular enclosing structure and read messages displayed on embedded devices. Arduino display experiments connect the sculptural form to fragments of language, carrying the AR narrative into a physical encounter.
Repeated messages and bright graphic overlays occupy the city facade, turning everyday urban space into a field of clues.
Fragmented digital objects appear against outdoor architecture and green space, expressing compression and disruption through their form.
A visitor approaches the enclosing structure and its embedded screens. The encounter links physical proximity with the reading of personal messages.
